Plug and Play (PnP)

Windows device-detection system that matches hardware with drivers and installation logic.

Plug and Play (PnP) is the Windows device-detection system that identifies new hardware, matches it with drivers, and launches the installation logic needed to make the device work. It is designed for convenience: when a keyboard, storage device, or peripheral appears, Windows automatically decides what software and services to load.

That automation matters in security because PnP is a trust decision as much as a usability feature. If an attacker can present a convincing emulated device, Windows may follow the same installation path it uses for legitimate hardware and invoke signed drivers or vendor installers. In defenses, administrators reduce risk by restricting device redirection, limiting driver installation, and reviewing which components run with elevated privileges. In short, PnP can be a shortcut for attackers when device handling is too permissive.
