Pneumatic display

A display that uses air pressure or vacuum to create visible output.

A pneumatic display is a visual output device that uses air pressure or vacuum to create an image, symbol, or status indicator. Instead of emitting light like an LCD or OLED panel, it changes the position of parts, shadows, or airflow-driven elements so that information becomes visible through motion or contrast.

In cyber security, pneumatic displays matter because they are often part of cyber-physical systems where sensing, actuation, and human feedback are tightly linked. Operators may trust the display as a direct reflection of machine state, but the visible output can lag, fail, or be misleading if the mechanics are miscalibrated. Attackers do not need to “hack the screen” for this to become a risk; confusing or spoofed state indicators can lead to unsafe decisions. Defenders use clear status logic, redundancy, and physical verification to ensure that what the operator sees matches the actual system condition.
