A point-in-time assessment is a review of security controls, configurations, or compliance status based on one fixed moment, like a snapshot. It answers, “What was true at the time of the check?” rather than showing whether the system stayed secure afterward.
This matters in cyber security because attackers and misconfigurations change over time. A system may look compliant during an audit but drift later, or an intruder may alter settings after the review. Defenders use point-in-time assessments for audits, baseline validation, and evidence collection, but they must combine them with continuous monitoring, logging, and automated checks to catch control drift and prove that protections remain effective between snapshots.
