A point-of-sale (POS) system is the hardware and software used to take orders, process payments, print receipts, and record sales. In hospitality settings, it often connects to booking tools, inventory, loyalty programs, and guest records, so it can handle more than just card transactions.
POS systems matter because they are high-value targets for attackers. If criminals gain access, they may steal payment data, disrupt business operations, or use the POS device as a stepping stone into the wider network. In real attacks, POS compromise can happen through stolen credentials, exposed remote access, weak segmentation, or malicious software. Defenders reduce risk by isolating POS networks, limiting administrative access, patching promptly, monitoring for suspicious activity, and keeping offline backups and recovery procedures ready.
