Police impersonation

A fraud tactic that uses a fake law-enforcement identity to create urgency and compliance.

Police impersonation is a social-engineering tactic in which an attacker pretends to be law enforcement to pressure a target into acting quickly. The fake authority creates fear, urgency, and a sense that questioning the call could cause trouble. It is often combined with believable details, such as a parcel dispute, a legal complaint, or an account investigation, to make the story feel official.

This matters in cyber security because it can bypass technical defenses by targeting human trust instead of software. Real attacks may use phone calls, text messages, or email to push victims toward payment, disclosure of personal data, or account access. Defenders reduce risk by verifying identities through a known, independent contact channel, training staff to pause on urgent requests, and treating unsolicited demands from “police” as untrusted until confirmed.
