Policy Tuning

Adjusting detection rules so a control stays effective without breaking normal use.

Policy tuning is the process of adjusting security rules so a control blocks real threats without disrupting normal activity. In web protection, that means refining WAF signatures, thresholds, exceptions, and sensitivity levels until legitimate traffic is allowed and malicious traffic is still caught.

It matters because overly strict policies create false positives, broken logins, failed checkouts, and noisy alerting. Overly loose policies miss attacks such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting, bot abuse, or unusual API misuse. Good tuning is a defensive discipline: teams review logs, test application changes, and update exceptions when the site’s behavior changes. Attackers also benefit when tuning is poor, since rigid or outdated policies can be bypassed by blending in with normal traffic or forcing defenders to disable protections. Effective policy tuning keeps security usable, trusted, and aligned with how the application actually runs.
