Power Skills

Human skills such as communication, empathy, leadership, and influence.

Power skills are the human abilities that make technical work effective: communication, empathy, leadership, persuasion, and the ability to influence without formal authority. In cybersecurity, these skills matter because security is rarely solved by tools alone. Teams must explain risk clearly, coordinate across departments, and get people to follow controls that may feel inconvenient.

Attackers exploit weak power skills by targeting trust, urgency, and hierarchy through phishing, impersonation, and social engineering. Defenders use power skills to run incident response, brief executives, train users, and negotiate safer behavior with developers, IT, and business owners. Strong power skills help security teams turn technical findings into action, reduce confusion during an incident, and build cooperation that prevents small issues from becoming breaches.
