Precautionary measures

Defensive steps taken while the full scope of an incident is still unclear.

Precautionary measures are defensive actions taken when a cybersecurity incident is suspected but the full scope, cause, or impact is not yet clear. These steps are meant to reduce risk while investigators gather facts. Common examples include isolating affected systems, limiting network access, disabling risky services, forcing password resets, and increasing monitoring for unusual activity.

In cyber security, precautionary measures matter because uncertainty is often part of the incident itself. Waiting for complete confirmation can give attackers more time to move laterally, exfiltrate data, or disrupt operations. A well-planned precautionary response helps contain damage, protect customers, and keep critical services running. In real incidents, organizations may take such measures even before they know whether the event is ransomware, data theft, or a false alarm, because the defensive goal is to shrink the attack surface until the situation is understood.
