Predecessor company

an earlier corporate entity whose obligations can carry into a later business structure.

A predecessor company is an earlier corporate entity whose assets, users, contracts, or legal obligations may continue inside a later business structure after a merger, acquisition, rebrand, or spin-off. In cyber security, this matters because data, logs, consent records, retention duties, and incident-response obligations often survive a corporate change even when the brand name changes.

Defenders need to map inherited systems and records carefully. Old authentication stores, legacy cloud accounts, forgotten backups, and customer databases can remain exposed if teams assume the previous company no longer matters. Attackers also benefit from this confusion, using weakly managed legacy environments to find stale credentials or overlooked services. For compliance, the key question is not only who owns the current platform, but which predecessor collected the data, under what terms, and which controls still apply. Clear asset inventories, legal review, and data lineage tracking help reduce that risk.
