Preset

a preconfigured option designed to simplify a repeated task.

A preset is a preconfigured option that automates a repeated task. In cyber security, presets appear in tools such as firewalls, scanners, backup systems, and identity platforms. They save time by applying common settings quickly, but they also encode assumptions about what is “normal” or “safe.”

Presets matter because attackers often exploit weak defaults, while defenders rely on secure presets to reduce human error. For example, an exposed admin panel, permissive access rule, or “recommended” install profile can create risk if it is never reviewed. Good security practice is to treat presets as starting points, not final decisions: verify what the preset enables, disable anything unnecessary, and tune it to the environment. In short, a preset improves consistency, but only careful review makes it trustworthy.
