Private 5G is a mobile network built for a particular organization or site rather than for general public use. It uses 5G technology to connect devices such as sensors, vehicles, machines, and staff equipment, often with network management tailored to the site’s needs.
In settings such as ports, private 5G can support automation and edge computing by connecting operational equipment and enabling data to be processed nearby. For cybersecurity, it creates a dedicated communications layer, but that does not make it automatically secure. Operators need strong device identity and access controls, network segmentation, monitoring, and recovery plans. If compromised devices or poorly separated systems can communicate too broadly, an attack could disrupt connected operations.
