Privileged accounts are administrative or high-trust accounts that can change system settings, manage users, access sensitive data, or control security tools. Because they have more power than standard user accounts, they are one of the most valuable assets in a network and one of the first things attackers try to find.
In cyber security, privileged accounts matter because a single stolen admin login can let an intruder disable defenses, create backdoors, move laterally, or exfiltrate data quickly. Defenders protect them with strong passwords, phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication, least-privilege access, separate admin accounts, and careful logging. In an extortion or ransomware investigation, reviewing privileged account activity is a priority because unusual logins, privilege escalation, or new admin creation can reveal how an attacker gained control.
