Privileged Identity Management (PIM)

A system for managing, approving, and auditing access to sensitive roles and resources.

Privileged Identity Management (PIM) is a security control for handling access to sensitive administrative roles and resources. Instead of leaving powerful permissions permanently active, PIM lets users request, activate, approve, and time-limit elevated access. It often includes multi-factor authentication, justification prompts, access reviews, and audit logs.

PIM matters because stolen or misused admin credentials are a common path to ransomware, data theft, and cloud compromise. By reducing standing privilege, PIM narrows the window an attacker can abuse if an account is phished or hijacked. In defense, organizations use PIM to enforce just-in-time elevation, separate routine work from privileged tasks, and preserve evidence of who approved access and when. In practice, PIM is only effective when roles are tightly scoped and activations are monitored and reviewed.
