Privileged OS user

An account with elevated operating-system rights that can make sensitive system changes.

A privileged OS user is an operating-system account with elevated rights, such as root on Linux or an administrator account on Windows. These accounts can start and stop services, change files and permissions, install software, modify security settings, and execute commands that ordinary users cannot.

In cyber security, this matters because compromise of a privileged account often turns a small foothold into full host control. Attackers try to reach these accounts through stolen credentials, token theft, local privilege escalation, or flaws that let them run commands with higher rights. Defenders protect them with least privilege, separate admin accounts, multi-factor authentication, audit logging, and tight access to management interfaces. When logs show unexpected logins, service changes, or configuration edits by a privileged OS user, that is often an early sign of abuse.
