Privileged permission

An elevated Android permission reserved for trusted system software, often unavailable to ordinary user-installed apps.

A privileged permission is an Android permission reserved for trusted system software, typically apps that ship in the system image or are signed by the device maker. Ordinary user-installed apps cannot request it in the normal way. These permissions can control sensitive functions such as device settings, hidden background services, or access to protected interfaces.

In security work, privileged permissions matter because abuse of them can turn preinstalled software into persistent malware. If a malicious or compromised system component inherits privileged access, uninstalling apps will not remove the threat, and the user may not be able to revoke the permission. Defenders look for this by reviewing firmware provenance, auditing privileged apps, enforcing verified boot, and updating or replacing compromised system images.
