Procurement cycle

The process an organization uses to plan, buy, and replace hardware.

The procurement cycle is the process an organization uses to plan, approve, buy, receive, and eventually replace hardware and other technology assets. In security teams, it covers everything from forecasting a lab refresh to choosing vendors, negotiating contracts, and scheduling end-of-life replacements. It matters because cyber security depends on having enough current, reliable compute for detection, analysis, testing, and recovery.

Attackers and defenders both feel the effects of the procurement cycle. Defenders may delay upgrades when prices rise, leaving older systems in service longer and reducing capacity for logging, sandboxing, or AI-assisted analysis. Attackers can exploit that slowdown indirectly by targeting aging infrastructure, unsupported devices, or stretched environments where patching and replacement lag behind need. A strong procurement cycle helps security teams track lifecycle risk, budget for resilience, and avoid surprise gaps when hardware becomes expensive or hard to source.
