Product identity

the visual and functional traits that make a device immediately recognizable.

Product identity is the combination of visual and functional traits that makes a device immediately recognizable. It includes shape, materials, indicator lights, ports, boot behavior, firmware behavior, and other cues that help users and technicians tell one product from another. In the Power Mac G3 context, the translucent case and distinctive form factor are part of that identity: the machine could be recognized at a glance, even before it powered on.

In cyber security, product identity matters because trust often depends on knowing exactly what device is in front of you. Attackers may clone a product’s look, spoof its firmware responses, or replace genuine hardware with counterfeit components to bypass inspection. Defenders use product identity in asset inventory, device fingerprinting, hardware authentication, and supply-chain checks to confirm provenance and spot tampering. A strong product identity can help reveal impostors, but it can also be abused when a convincing copy is good enough to fool people or systems.
