Production ownership

An operating model where the team that builds a service also supports it in production.

Production ownership is an operating model in which the same team that builds a service also supports it after release. That team is responsible for uptime, incident response, monitoring, rollback, and fixing defects in the live environment. In security engineering, this matters because the people who change a system also feel the cost of failures, so they tend to build safer deploys, better alerts, and clearer recovery paths.

It is especially useful for reducing the gap between development and operations, which attackers can exploit when weak handoffs leave services misconfigured or slow to patch. With production ownership, teams are more likely to automate checks, use feature flags, limit blast radius, and watch sensitive paths such as authentication and tenant data flows. The model does not remove risk, but it makes secure delivery a shared responsibility instead of a ticket passed between groups.
