Production restart

The operational phase where a plant resumes output after systems have been restored.

Production restart is the point in recovery when a plant begins making output again after systems, controls, and supporting services have been restored. In manufacturing, this is not the same as simply rebooting servers: operators must confirm that operational technology, safety interlocks, recipes, sensors, and dependencies are in a known safe state before the line runs.

This matters because cyber incidents can leave industrial environments partially repaired but still unsafe or unstable. A rushed restart can cause bad setpoints, broken automation, spoiled product, or physical damage. Defenders reduce this risk with tested backups, asset inventories, recovery exercises, and cross-team signoff from IT, engineering, and operations. In real attacks, the hardest recovery step is often not restoring data, but proving the plant is ready to restart production with confidence.
