Profile enrichment is the process of combining multiple data points about a person into a more detailed record. A single email address, phone number, job title, employer, and social profile may seem harmless on their own, but together they can reveal identity, role, relationships, and likely behavior. Data brokers and marketing platforms use enrichment to make records more complete and searchable.
In cyber security, enrichment matters because it increases the value and risk of personal data. Attackers can use enriched profiles for spear phishing, impersonation, credential stuffing, or targeting high-value employees with convincing messages. Defenders also use enrichment for legitimate purposes, such as fraud detection, identity verification, and asset management. The security challenge is to limit collection, control sharing, and keep only the data needed for a clear purpose, so enriched records do not become an unnecessary attack surface.
