Profile separation

Keeping users and restrictions distinct within one account.

Profile separation means keeping different users’ settings, activity, and access restrictions distinct within a shared account. On a streaming service, for example, separate profiles can give household members their own viewing history and recommendations, while parental controls can restrict content on a child’s profile.

In cyber security, separation helps limit accidental exposure and makes access rules easier to apply. It is not the same as having separate accounts: profiles may still share the account owner’s credentials, billing, and recovery options. In practice, users should set restrictions on the correct profile and protect the main account with a strong, unique password and multifactor authentication where available.
