Project-scoped configuration

Settings stored for a specific repository or workspace that can change how a tool behaves in that context.

Project-scoped configuration is a set of settings stored for one repository, workspace, or project. Unlike global app preferences, these values only apply when a tool is opened in that specific context. They may define enabled integrations, approval rules, environment variables, build steps, or which local services a developer assistant can use.

This matters because configuration can influence execution, not just appearance. In cyber security, a malicious or changed project file can redirect a trusted tool into loading unsafe helpers, relaxing prompts, or running commands the user did not intend. Defenders treat these files as sensitive inputs: review them like code, keep defaults restrictive, require explicit approval for new integrations, and reset trust when switching branches or opening unfamiliar workspaces. The security lesson is simple: if a repository can shape tool behavior, it can also shape risk.
