Promotional offer

a temporary commercial condition that can change the price or benefits of a product.

A promotional offer is a temporary commercial condition that changes a product’s price, fees, or benefits for a limited time. In digital finance, it may waive charges, add cashback, or unlock extra features, but only if the user meets specific requirements such as activation steps, spending thresholds, or enrollment windows.

In cyber security, promotional offers matter because attackers often abuse them as social-engineering bait. Phishing pages and fake app messages may promise “free” cards, bonus rewards, or urgent discount deadlines to push users into entering credentials, one-time passcodes, or payment data. Defenders reduce this risk by verifying the issuer, checking the exact terms, and confirming that promotion pages use the organization’s real domain, branding, and secure checkout flow. The key lesson is that a promotion is not just marketing text; it is a rule set that should be inspected like any other trust boundary.
