A Protected Business Network (PBN) is a secured enterprise network layer used for internal collaboration, sensitive data exchange, and operational support. In a defense context, it acts like a protected digital backbone: users, applications, and partner organizations can share information, but only through controlled identity checks, segmentation, encryption, and logging. The goal is to keep business and mission-support traffic reliable without exposing it to the open internet or to less trusted environments.
PBNs matter because modern defense and enterprise operations depend on data moving quickly and accurately. If an attacker compromises this layer, they may steal documents, alter data, or use the network as a path for lateral movement into more sensitive systems. Defenders therefore treat a PBN as critical infrastructure, applying zero-trust access, monitoring, supply-chain controls, and resilient cloud or on-premises services to preserve confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
