Protected store

A controlled location for secrets, such as a secret manager or encrypted vault.

A protected store is a controlled location for sensitive values such as passwords, API keys, and access tokens. Examples include a secrets manager or an encrypted vault, which can enforce access controls and reduce the chance that credentials appear in ordinary files or workflows.

In cyber security, keeping a secret in a protected store is only part of safe handling: it can still be exposed if software copies it into command arguments, logs, transcripts, or model context. Defenses include limiting which tools and users can retrieve secrets, using short-lived and narrowly scoped credentials, and preventing sensitive values from being retained in output.
