Provisioning profile

An iOS signing and distribution mechanism used to run apps outside normal store flow.

A provisioning profile is an iOS distribution file that ties an app to a signing certificate, app identifier, entitlements, and sometimes a specific set of devices. It tells iOS whether the app is allowed to run, and under what conditions, outside the normal App Store flow.

This matters in cyber security because attackers can abuse enterprise, ad hoc, or developer-style distribution to side-load malicious apps. Instead of passing through App Store review, a trojanized app may be signed and installed through a provisioning path that looks legitimate to the device. That makes the profile part of the trust chain: if the certificate or profile is stolen, misused, or granted too broadly, an attacker can deliver spyware, loaders, or bait apps directly to users.

Defenders watch for unexpected enterprise installs, revoked certificates, and unsigned or re-signed apps. In practice, provisioning profiles are useful for testing and internal deployment, but they also create a common route for mobile malware when attackers try to bypass store controls.
