Public digital services

online systems used to deliver government or civic functions.

Public digital services are online systems used by governments and civic bodies to deliver everyday functions such as tax filing, permits, benefits, identity checks, transport updates, and municipal portals. They are often exposed to the internet and support large numbers of users, so availability and trust are critical.

In cyber security, these services matter because disruption can affect many people at once and can undermine confidence in public institutions. Attackers may target them with DDoS traffic, web application exploits, credential attacks, or destructive malware to interrupt access or create confusion. Defenders protect them with layered controls such as strong authentication, patching, segmentation, monitoring, backup and recovery plans, and rapid incident verification so that claims of compromise are not treated as proof without technical evidence.
