Public-source monitoring

Watching public code and other public surfaces for exposed credentials that need response.

Public-source monitoring is the process of watching public code and other public-facing surfaces for exposed secrets such as API keys, tokens, passwords, and private certificates. Unlike a local scanner that checks only a repository or CI pipeline, this control looks outward for credentials that may already have escaped into visible places.

It matters because once a secret is public, attackers can search for it and use it to access cloud services, source code, or internal systems. In defense, monitoring platforms continuously scan public repositories, commits, and similar surfaces, then alert security teams so they can revoke or rotate the credential, remove the exposure, and investigate possible misuse. It is most effective when combined with prevention and verification, since public exposure often means the secret should be treated as compromised until proven otherwise.
