A publication threat is a warning that stolen, leaked, or sensitive data may be released publicly if the attacker’s demands are not met. In extortion cases, the threat can be part of ransom negotiations, used to pressure a target into paying, conceding, or responding quickly. The message may be true, exaggerated, or incomplete, but it is designed to create urgency and fear.
This matters in cyber security because the risk is not only the data itself, but also the operational, legal, and reputational damage that can follow public disclosure. Defenders treat a publication threat as a potential exposure event: they verify what data may be involved, assess whether it was actually stolen, preserve evidence, prepare internal and legal response, and monitor for signs of release. Even without a confirmed leak, the threat alone can disrupt incident response and business operations.
