QNAME minimization is a privacy feature in recursive DNS resolvers. Instead of sending the full requested domain name to every upstream DNS server, a resolver sends only the portion needed at each step of the lookup. This limits how much information those servers learn about the names users are resolving.
Minimization can reduce unnecessary disclosure, but it must work correctly with the resolver’s configuration and the DNS zones it handles. In the BIND context described here, a crash condition was associated with enabling strict QNAME minimization alongside a redirect zone, potentially making the resolver unavailable. Administrators should apply relevant software updates and review configurations; disabling a privacy feature may be a temporary mitigation only when vendor guidance supports it.
