Qualified electronic signature

a signature type designed to carry stronger legal weight under eIDAS rules.

A qualified electronic signature is a digital signature that meets the highest legal standard under eIDAS. It is created with a qualified signature device and a qualified certificate issued by a trusted provider, which gives it stronger presumption of authenticity and integrity than ordinary electronic signatures.

In cyber security, the value of a qualified signature is not just cryptographic strength, but the trust chain around it. Attackers often target the surrounding workflow instead of the signing key itself: browser extensions, phishing pages, malicious prompts, and compromised endpoints can trick users into approving a signature or exposing authentication data. Defenders protect these systems with hardened signing devices, strict certificate management, browser isolation, device controls, and user verification steps. When those layers fail, the signature algorithm may remain intact, but the legal and operational trust in the signed action can still be undermined.
