Quality metrics

Measurable indicators used to judge whether work is meeting expected standards.

Quality metrics are measurable indicators used to judge whether work meets expected standards. In cyber security, they help teams move beyond vague impressions and track things like patch latency, alert accuracy, incident response time, false-positive rates, and control coverage. Good metrics make it easier to compare performance over time, spot weak points, and prove whether a process is actually improving.

They matter because security work is easy to misread. A team may look busy while missing critical risks, or may ship changes quickly while creating insecure configurations. Attackers benefit when organizations rely on speed alone and ignore quality signals. Defenders use quality metrics to balance urgency with correctness, measure the reliability of monitoring and response, and hold people and tools to clear standards. In practice, strong metrics support better decisions, better training, and less subjective performance review.
