Query processing is the server-side logic that reads a request, interprets query parameters or structured input, and turns them into data lookups, filtering, or routing decisions. In a web app or CMS, this layer sits between the public endpoint and the database or internal application logic.
It matters because mistakes here can turn ordinary requests into security bugs. If input is not validated, sanitized, or constrained, attackers may tamper with filters, trigger unexpected code paths, or reach dangerous operations such as unauthorized data access or remote code execution. Defenders focus on strict input handling, parameterized queries, allowlists, and careful parsing of REST and API requests. During incident response, abnormal query patterns, oversized payloads, and requests that hit unusual processing branches are often clues that the query-processing layer is being abused.
