Ranking

The ordering of search results based on relevance signals and other criteria.

Ranking is the process search systems use to order results by relevance, trust, freshness, authority, and other signals. In a classic search engine, ranking decides which pages appear first; in AI-mediated search, it can also influence which sources are retrieved and which facts shape a direct answer. Because most users click the top results, ranking strongly affects visibility, traffic, and trust.

In cyber security, ranking is a target for abuse. Attackers may use search engine poisoning, spam pages, link manipulation, or keyword stuffing to push malicious sites upward and trick users into visiting fake downloads, phishing pages, or scam content. Defenders counter this with anti-spam systems, reputation scoring, anomaly detection, and manual review. For organizations, monitoring how owned content ranks can also reveal impersonation, hijacking, or unexpected suppression.
