A ranking pipeline is the multi-step process that selects candidate items, scores them with a model or rules, and orders them before they are shown to a user. In recommender systems and search products, this pipeline often combines filtering, relevance scoring, and re-ranking based on context, past behavior, and business goals.
It matters in cyber security because the pipeline controls visibility, which can be attacked or abused. Adversaries may try to poison training data, inflate clicks, or game ranking signals so harmful or misleading content is surfaced more often. Defenders watch for abnormal engagement patterns, biased feedback loops, and weak traceability. Good controls include audit logs, model testing, source diversity checks, and human oversight, so operators can see when optimization starts distorting user choice or amplifying risky content.
