Ransomware negotiation is the process of managing communications with attackers after an extortion incident. It can involve assessing demands, deadlines, and claims; seeking proof that stolen data exists or can be restored; and deciding whether and how to respond. Negotiation does not guarantee data recovery or prevent publication, and paying a ransom can carry legal, financial, and operational risks.
Organizations typically coordinate this work through incident responders, legal counsel, leadership, and, where appropriate, specialist negotiators. Clear authority, documented communications, and independent oversight help prevent confusion and conflicts of interest. Negotiators may communicate with attackers, but defenders should separately preserve evidence, contain the intrusion, investigate the breach, and meet applicable reporting duties. Treat negotiation as one part of incident response-not a substitute for it.
