Real-time biometric identification is the live matching of biometric data, such as a face, against a reference set while an event is happening. In practice, a camera feed is compared continuously with a watch-list so the system can raise an alert immediately if it finds a possible match.
This matters in cyber security and digital policing because it turns identity checks into a time-sensitive control process. The main risks are false positives, overbroad watch-lists, tampered logs, and unauthorized access to biometric data. Defenders reduce those risks with strict authorization, narrow deployment rules, audit trails, access controls, and retention limits. Attackers may try to poison reference sets, evade detection, or abuse alerts to trigger unnecessary stops or surveillance.
