Realm

An authentication domain in Tomcat that validates users against a configured identity source.

In Apache Tomcat, a Realm is an authentication domain that checks login credentials against a configured identity source. Depending on the setup, that source may be a local file, a database, an LDAP directory, or another authentication system. Tomcat uses the Realm to determine whether a user is valid and what roles or permissions they have.

Realms matter in cybersecurity because they help enforce the boundary between unauthenticated and authorized access. A flaw or unsafe configuration in a Realm or its login flow can weaken authentication, potentially allowing access that should be denied. Defenders should identify which Realm is active, confirm its identity source and role mappings, and apply relevant Tomcat updates. In real deployments, exposure depends on the affected Tomcat version and whether the vulnerable component or configuration is in use.
