A records leak is the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information, such as customer data, account details, internal documents, or credentials. In cyber security, a leak matters because exposed records can be used for extortion, identity abuse, fraud, or further intrusion. Even when an attacker does not fully disrupt a network, stolen or published records can create immediate business and privacy harm.
Records leaks often appear after phishing, stolen credentials, insider misuse, or exploitation of an exposed system. Attackers may use the threat of publication to increase leverage over an organization, especially when the data is valuable or regulated. Defenders reduce this risk with strong access control, logging, data classification, encryption, and rapid containment so compromised accounts or systems cannot expose more information than necessary.
