Recovery infrastructure is the set of systems and controls used to restore data, services, or business operations after disruption. It can include backup repositories, restore tooling, failover systems, key management, privileged access controls, and the automation that brings workloads back online.
It matters because attackers increasingly target recovery paths, not just production systems. If backup accounts, restore permissions, snapshots, or orchestration platforms are disabled, deleted, or tampered with, an organization may be unable to recover quickly. In cloud attacks, defenders watch for unusual deletion activity, changes to backup settings, unexpected access to recovery roles, and identity abuse that could slow or block restoration. Protecting recovery infrastructure with segmentation, separate credentials, immutable backups, and tested restore procedures helps limit the impact of destructive incidents.
