Recovery isolation

keeping backups and restore paths separate from active systems.

Recovery isolation means keeping backups, snapshots, and restore systems separate from the active production environment. The goal is to prevent ransomware, destructive malware, or a compromised admin account from reaching the copies that are meant to save the business. If attackers can encrypt or delete both live systems and recovery paths, recovery becomes slow, expensive, or impossible.

In practice, isolation can include offline backups, immutable storage, separate credentials, segmented networks, and restore servers that are not permanently joined to the domain. Defenders use these controls to preserve a clean recovery point even when production is under attack. During incident response, recovery isolation also helps teams validate which systems are trustworthy before restoring data, reducing the chance of reinfection or restoring poisoned files back into the environment.
