Recovery Point Objective, or RPO, is the maximum amount of data loss an organization can tolerate after an incident. It is measured in time, so an RPO of 1 hour means the business can afford to lose at most the last hour of changes. The shorter the RPO, the more frequently data must be backed up or replicated.
RPO matters because recovery is not just about restoring systems; it is also about how much information survives. In cyber security, ransomware, accidental deletion, cloud misconfiguration, or account loss can force a restore, and the RPO determines how much work may need to be redone. Defenders use RPO when designing backup schedules, replication, and retention policies, then test restores to see whether the target is realistic. In cloud or AI hosting bundles, an included backup is only useful if its timing matches the business’s RPO.
