Recovery posture

an organization's ability to restore systems and data after disruption.

Recovery posture is an organization’s ability to restore systems and data after a disruption such as ransomware, destructive malware, accidental deletion, or infrastructure failure. It covers more than having backups: it includes backup integrity, recovery speed, restoration procedures, access control, and the staff and tooling needed to bring services back online safely.

In cyber security, recovery posture matters because attackers often expect defenders to be able to stop them eventually, but not always to recover quickly. A weak posture can turn a contained incident into prolonged outage, data loss, or repeated reinfection. Good recovery posture is built through offline or immutable backups, regular restore testing, segmented admin access, documented recovery priorities, and clear incident-response playbooks. During an attack, these measures help teams rebuild trusted systems and resume operations with less downtime and less pressure to pay extortion demands.
