Recredit

The return of funds to a payment account after a disputed or unauthorized transfer.

Recredit is the return of funds to a payment account after a disputed or unauthorized transfer. In payment security and consumer protection, it restores the account balance while the provider investigates what happened and who may be responsible.

In real-world fraud response, recredit is distinct from investigating the transaction or seeking recovery from another party. Under PSD2, providers generally must recredit unauthorized payments promptly, usually by the end of the next business day after becoming aware of them, subject to a narrow exception for suspected customer fraud. This separation matters in attacks involving stolen credentials or social engineering: restoring funds does not determine how the transaction occurred or settle later liability.
