Reimbursement

the process through which a healthcare payer approves and funds a therapy or service.

Reimbursement is the process by which a healthcare payer, such as an insurer or public health system, approves and pays for a therapy or service. In practice, it determines whether a treatment can move from a promising idea to something that is routinely offered to patients. For digital therapeutics, reimbursement is often the main gatekeeper: without a clear payment pathway, even clinically useful software may remain a pilot project or a niche product.

Why it matters is simple: reimbursement shapes adoption. Clinicians are more likely to prescribe a therapy when they know it is funded, patients are more likely to use it when costs are covered, and providers are more likely to integrate it into care when payment rules are predictable. In real healthcare systems, reimbursement can depend on evidence of benefit, formal approval, coding rules, and prescribing procedures. If those steps are unclear or fragmented, access slows; if they are straightforward, the service can become part of routine care.
