Remediation debt

Accumulated security work that has been identified but not yet fixed.

Remediation debt is the growing backlog of security issues that have already been found but not yet fixed. It can include vulnerable packages, exposed services, weak configurations, or overdue patches. The term matters because security risk does not disappear when a scanner or analyst identifies a flaw; it remains open until the organization actually remediates it.

In real attacks, remediation debt gives adversaries a wider window to exploit known weaknesses, especially in software supply chains where many dependencies must be tracked and patched. Defenders reduce it by assigning severity, exposure, and ownership to each finding, then enforcing patch SLAs, exception handling, and continuous verification. Tools such as SBOMs, vulnerability scanners, and ticketing systems help teams see what is still outstanding and prevent the backlog from growing faster than the fix rate.
