Remote Monitoring and Control

The ability to observe or adjust equipment settings from another location through a networked interface.

Remote monitoring and control is the ability to observe equipment status and change settings from another location through a networked interface. In operational technology, this can include reading temperatures, viewing alarms, starting or stopping devices, and adjusting setpoints, defrost schedules, or restart logic.

This capability is valuable because it reduces on-site maintenance and speeds troubleshooting, but it also creates a high-value attack path. If credentials are stolen, remote services are exposed, or a vendor channel is abused, an attacker may be able to alter physical processes without touching the equipment directly. In incidents involving refrigeration or other industrial systems, that can cause spoilage, shutdowns, or safety risks. Defenders reduce the danger by segmenting OT from business IT, enforcing strong authentication, logging every control change, and alerting on unusual setpoint or alarm modifications.
