Remote-support appliance

A system that brokers remote administrative or helpdesk access.

A remote-support appliance is a system that brokers remote administrative or helpdesk access to users’ devices and internal systems. It may authenticate support staff, manage sessions, and provide access to privileged tools or credentials. Appliances can be self-hosted or delivered as a service.

Because it sits between support personnel and the systems they manage, an appliance is a high-value security boundary. Attackers who exploit it may gain opportunities to abuse privileged sessions, access sensitive networks, or tamper with logs. Defenders should promptly apply vendor fixes, restrict management access, monitor appliance and authentication logs, and review or rotate credentials that may have passed through it after suspected compromise.
