Renewable electricity mix is the percentage of a facility’s power that comes from renewable sources such as wind, solar, hydro, or geothermal energy. It is a key part of a site’s emissions profile because the same workload can have very different carbon impact depending on how the grid is supplied.
In cyber security, the term matters because modern infrastructure decisions are tied to sustainability targets, regulatory reporting, and procurement requirements. Cloud and data-center operators may use a high renewable mix to support lower-emission operations, but defenders should still verify the numbers through metering, utility contracts, and audited energy data. Attackers can exploit weak reporting by falsifying telemetry or tampering with management systems, so integrity checks and trusted measurement are important. A renewable-heavy mix does not reduce the need for security controls; it changes how operators balance performance, cost, resilience, and environmental claims.
