Reputation risk

the chance that public exposure undermines trust.

Reputation risk is the chance that public exposure undermines trust in a person, service, or criminal operation. In cyber security, trust is often part of the attack model: buyers need to believe a cheat tool works, victims need to believe a fake login page is real, and customers may need to trust a support channel or payment flow.

This matters because many abuse markets depend on credibility more than code. A public warning, takedown notice, leaked chat log, or filmed enforcement action can make operators look unsafe, unreliable, or easy to identify. That can reduce sales, scare off affiliates, and push criminals to rebrand or move channels. Defenders use reputation risk deliberately by publishing threat intelligence, exposing infrastructure, and making illicit services appear risky to use. In short, reputation can be an attack surface and a defense tool.
